What happens next after the “Lehman Brothers Shock”

This week the Japanese press was filled with dire predictions of the American, Japanese and world economy. This translation is from an article in the Sunday Mainichi magazine published on October 5th about the “Lehman Brothers shock” and its implications for Japan. Ten potential problems that could affect Japan were listed. I only mention two points.

Real Japanese

この”リーマン・ショック”は世界の株市場に波及し、ヨーロッパや日本、アジアの新興国でも大幅な株価下落を招いた。

How will it affect Japan?

企業収益の悪化を受け、今年冬のボーナスが激減するのでは、と戦々恐々のサラリーマンが多い。

Also…

年収ウン千万の高収入で、この世の春を謳歌してきた外資系サラリーマンにとって、暗黒の時代が始まった。

English Translation

The “Lehman Brothers Shock” spread through the world’s stock markets and caused stock prices to plunge in Europe, Japan and even in the newly developing countries of Asia.

How will it affect Japan?

Corporate profits will deteriorate. Many businessmen are very afraid that this year’s winter bonus will be reduced drastically.

Also…

For those businessmen who have been having the best of times working for foreign companies and making high salaries in the tens of millions; dark times have begun.

Japanese Language Points

この世の春を謳してきた- この世の春を謳歌する  means,  “enjoying the best times of your life.” してきた implies that an action has proceeded from the past up to the present.   Replace する with してきた and it means, “have been having the best of times.”

ウン千万- “tens of millions”

企業収益の悪化を受け- A direct translation would be,   “corporate profits will be subjected to a worsening (situation).” My translation is  “corporate profits will deteriorate.”
